Yet\, AI might be more accurately described as a range of technologies providing a convincing illusion of intelligence – in other words\, not much the creation of intelligent beings\, but rather of technologies that are perceived by humans as such. Drawing from the history of AI from the Turing Test to contemporary generative AI models such as ChatGPT\, but also from comparisons with the history of spiritualism and pre-digital media histories\, I will show that deception is fundamental to the very functioning of AI\, and the “intelligence” of machines resides also and especially in the perception of human users.\n \nSimone Natale is Associate Professor in Media Theory and History at the University of Turin\, Italy\, and Editor of the journal Media\, Culture & Society. He is the author of two monographs\, most recently Deceitful Media: Artificial Intelligence and Social Life after the Turing Test (Oxford University Press\, 2021\, translated into Chinese\, Italian and Portuguese)\, as well as numerous articles in journals such as New Media & Society\, the Journal of Communication\, Communication Theory\, and Information\, Communication & Society. He has taught and researched at Columbia University\, US\, Concordia University in Montreal\, Canada\, Humboldt University and the University of Cologne in Germany\, and Loughborough University in the UK\, and his research has been funded by international institutions such as AHRC\, ESRC\, the Humboldt Foundation and Columbia University’s Italian Academy. \n\n\n\nJonathan Martineau\nUniversité Concordia \nLe capital algorithmique et le concept de « temps de loisir »\nCette présentation se penchera sur les conditions socio-économiques de l’avènement d’un nouveau stade du capitalisme : le capitalisme algorithmique. Dans un deuxième temps nous explorerons certains impacts du capital algorithmique sur les catégories de temps social.\n \nJonathan Martineau est professeur adjoint au Liberal Arts College de l’Université Concordia et directeur du Centre Interdisciplinaire de recherche sur le temps\, la technologie et le capitalisme (CIRTTC – cirttc.org). Il se spécialise en histoire des idées\, en économie politique et en études de la technologie. Il est l’auteur entre autres de Time\, Capitalism and Alienation (Brill) et Le capital algorithmique. Accumulation\, pouvoir et résistance à l’ère de l’intelligence artificielle (Écosociété – avec Jonathan Durand Folco).
